From Factory Floor to Global Markets: How Van Ryn Rubber Scales Through Control, Not Conditions

In South Africa’s manufacturing sector, it’s easy to focus on what’s not working: power constraints, imports, red tape, and constant operational pressure.

Van Ryn Rubber, based in Pinetown and led by Shannon Proctor, has taken a different path.

Processing around 500 tonnes of rubber every month, the business produces millions of precision components…seals, valves and grommets, that keep vehicles, infrastructure and industrial systems functioning. Today, it supplies customers in more than 48 countries.

This is not a business built on hype. It is built on control.

Shannon’s journey started from a financial lens, spotting value where others saw scrap  and then systematically building capability, capacity and market reach. What stands out is not just the scale, but the discipline behind it.

Where many businesses get trapped reacting to external noise, Van Ryn focused inward:

  • Tightening quality standards
  • Investing in plant and machinery
  • Building stockholding capability
  • Improving response times
  • Strengthening export channels

This is a practical example of what we call building an Asset of Value™ –  a business that grows because its systems, standards and team are engineered to perform, not because conditions are favourable.

For established business owners, the lesson is clear.

At a certain stage, growth stops being about effort and starts being about structure. The question shifts from “What’s happening out there?” to “What inside the business needs to work better?”

We see this pattern often. When businesses clarify their positioning, build a consistent System of Delivery, and develop a purposeful team around it, performance stabilises. Margins improve. Dependency reduces. Growth becomes more deliberate.

A practical next step:
List the three areas in your business you complain about most. Now separate them into two columns: what you control, and what you don’t.

Then act on the first column.

That’s where growth starts.
