Fabrinox: Building deeper customer relationships from South Africa to the world

A full order book can look like success. But if every job is a once-off, a busy business can still be a fragile one.

Paarl-based metal manufacturer Fabrinox offers a useful lesson in how established businesses can create more sustainable growth by becoming increasingly valuable to the right customers.

Led by Managing Director Wessel van Zyl, Fabrinox combines capabilities that are often offered separately. The business can manufacture individual metal components, build larger assemblies, deliver complex projects, and install and maintain equipment internationally.

Its South African installation teams have already worked across 36 countries.

From supplier to long-term partner

What makes the Fabrinox model particularly interesting is the way one capability can lead naturally into the next.

A customer may initially approach Fabrinox for a component. If that component is delivered exceptionally well, trust grows. That creates an opportunity to manufacture a larger assembly, take responsibility for a project, install the equipment and potentially maintain it over time.

Each step increases the value Fabrinox can provide to the customer – and deepens the relationship.

For an established business, this can be a powerful growth strategy.

Instead of continually acquiring new customers and starting every sale from zero, the business grows by solving progressively bigger problems for customers who already know and trust it.

Choose where you can be exceptional

Wessel’s lesson for other business owners is equally important: growth requires choices.

In competitive industries, trying to be everything to everyone can spread people, capital and attention too thinly.

The alternative is to understand where your business can genuinely deliver exceptional value and deliberately invest behind it.

That clarity also needs to extend beyond the leadership team.

When employees understand where the business has chosen to compete, what the customer promise is and what excellent delivery looks like, everyone can pull in the same direction.

Build marriages, not one-offs

This leads to the Future50 Growth Tip from Pavlo Phitidis: Build marriages, not one-offs.

Look at your best customers and ask: What could we do next for them?

Could a product sale become a service relationship? Could a project become a maintenance contract? Could a local customer relationship follow them into another market?

Deeper relationships can create more predictable work, make better use of existing people and assets, and ultimately build a more resilient and valuable business.

Fabrinox demonstrates what can happen when South African manufacturing capability, technical skills and customer relationships are combined with a clear idea of where a business wants to win.
