The Business Builders Podcast
Are You Protecting the Business You Have, or Building the One You Want?
Choosing the Right Growth Model for Your Business
You can buy a good business, protect its people and keep its operations running, yet still put its future at risk if you never decide what business you are actually building.
In this episode of Business Builders Podcast, Pavlo Phitidis works with two owners who completed a management buyout of an established manufacturing business.
They preserved the team, brands, manufacturing capability and customer relationships.
Now they face a different challenge: what should the business become next?
Preserving a Business Is Not the Same as Growing It
The business has its own blending capability, established products and strong quality systems.
But it is carrying two very different growth models.
- One is contract manufacturing, producing for a small number of larger customers.
- The other is building and growing its own brands across a broader customer base.
Both can generate revenue. But they require different positioning, sales systems and capabilities.
Trying to pursue both equally risks building neither deliberately.
Choose the Business You Want to Build
Contract manufacturing offers volume and can make effective use of production capacity. But dependence on a handful of large customers creates concentration risk.
Building your own brand offers greater control over your market and customer base. But it requires clear positioning and a repeatable sales engine.
If you want the freedom of your own brand, you need a sales system as deliberate as the factory behind it.
Turn Your Growth Choice Into Action
For these owners, that means three things:
- Choose the customer segment you want to own. Build a clear sales message around a defined customer.
- Turn technical sales knowledge into a playbook. Capture what the senior expert knows so more people can sell effectively.
- Use contract manufacturing strategically. Let it support production volume and purchasing scale without allowing a few customers to determine the future of the business.
Is Your Past Determining Your Future?
Responsibility is not only about protecting what already works. Sometimes it means making a deliberate choice about what the business must become next.
Ask yourself: Are you still running the model that got you here because it feels responsible to protect it, or have you chosen the model that can take you where you want to go?
