How Business Owners Can Lead Through Uncertainty

How Business Owners Can Lead Through Uncertainty

Business uncertainty is not going away.

Interest rates, inflation, supply chains, regulation, geopolitical events and changing customer behaviour continue to reshape the environment in which established businesses operate.

The natural response is for business owners to get closer to everything.

More decisions. More checking. More problem-solving.

It feels responsible. But it can create a dangerous consequence: the owner gets pulled back into running the business instead of leading it.

In this episode of Business Builders Podcast, Pavlo Phitidis asks whether you are leading from the bridge or trapped in the engine room.

When Firefighting Becomes the Operating Model

The engine room matters. It is where sales happen, customers are served, cash is collected, people are managed and margins are protected.

But if the owner spends every day there, who is navigating the business?

As owner involvement increases, people begin waiting for decisions. Managers take less ownership. Problems flow upwards and the business becomes increasingly dependent on the owner.

External uncertainty creates internal uncertainty, and firefighting becomes the operating model.

Build a Business That Can Navigate Uncertainty

The answer isn’t predicting every storm. It is building a business capable of navigating through them.

Set a Long-Term Business Destination

Define where the business needs to be in seven to ten years.

What must it become? Who must it serve? What must it be known for? What must it be worth?

Your destination should be far enough away that short-term disruption doesn’t continually change it.

Create Clear Growth Waypoints

Turn that destination into shorter-term priorities.

Each waypoint should add something valuable to the business: a capability, system, team, market position, channel, customer base or asset.

Stabilise the Engine Room

Build clear routines, measures and accountability so that daily operations depend less on the owner.

That is what releases the owner to lead.

Simplicity Is an Advantage in Uncertain Times

One destination. A small number of growth waypoints. A stable engine room.

The route may change as conditions change. The destination should not change every quarter.

Ask yourself:

Am I leading this business from the bridge, or running it from the engine room?
