How to Scale a Business When You Can’t Find the Right People
The Skills Shortage Is Changing How Businesses Need to Scale
“We cannot find, hire or afford the right people to scale our business. What do we do?”
It is a question increasingly asked by established business owners.
The competition for capable people has intensified. Remote work has widened the employment market, experienced skills are leaving the workforce, new capabilities are developing faster than training can produce them, and AI is changing roles again.
In this episode of Business Builders Podcast, Pavlo Phitidis argues that when the same challenge appears across industries, countries and company sizes, it is no longer simply a recruitment problem.
It becomes a business design problem.
Why Relying on Exceptional People Limits Business Growth
Many businesses are still built around a familiar sequence:
People. Process. Profit… Find great people, rely on them to work out what needs doing, and hope strong performance follows.
The problem is that exceptional people are increasingly difficult and expensive to find.
And if growth depends on continually adding highly experienced people, the business becomes harder to scale.
Aurik approaches business growth differently: Position. Process. People.
1. Position the Business Clearly
First, determine exactly who you serve, what problem you solve, why customers should choose you and what experience you need to deliver.
Strong positioning removes unnecessary complexity and clarifies what the business needs to do consistently.
2. Build Repeatable Business Processes
Next, turn that positioning into processes.
Map how the business finds customers, wins them, fulfils its promise, retains them, invoices them and responds when things go wrong.
The objective is to move knowledge out of people’s heads and into the business.
3. Delegate Systems, Not Instructions
Only then should work be delegated.
There is an important difference between saying, “Please get this done” and giving someone a system that defines:
- When the work starts
- The steps required
- What good looks like
- What information must be recorded
- Which decisions they can make
- When they should escalate
Clear systems help capable people produce consistent outcomes without requiring exceptional experience or constant management.
How Better Business Systems Reduce Owner Dependency
This approach does more than address a skills shortage.
It helps leaders move out of daily coordination, checking, correcting and rescuing.
Their attention can shift towards strategy, markets, relationships and growth.
That is also fundamental to building an Asset of Value™: a business whose performance sits in its systems and team rather than depending on a handful of key individuals.
A Question for Business Owners
Where does your business still depend on finding an exceptional person to make something work?
Perhaps the first step is not finding a better person.
Perhaps it is designing a better system.
